The Plant Research Laboratory is a multi-faceted research facility at UIC. The lab consists of a 10,000 square foot greenhouse and outdoor garden space. The Plant Laboratory supports the research of several BioS Faculty and classes, and is an integral part of the UIC and Chicago community through many on and off-campus collaborations.

This Summit theme will remind attendees of how intrinsically tied the environmental justice movement is with the food justice movement. This Summit will also honor indigenous communities as the primary caretakers of Earth’s biodiversity (85%!) as well as a wealth of knowledge and resources as to how we could shift agricultural practices to be less taxing on the environment. Summit programming will emphasize the potential within the food system to address climate change.

Description: This program is a two-day workshop to research and implement materials grown in Art Garden @ UlC for hand papermaking. A focus on Experimental Farm Network-sourced kenaf will center the program on the history and utilization of pre-industrial paper for micro-industry, social engagement and climate-responsive product development.
The workshop takes place in the Columbia studios but focuses on practices that can be replicated in smaller-scale and informal spaces.
Mulberry fiber, also a bast fiber like kenaf, will be used as the primary material for our program as it is a realistic material to teach in a two-day format and assures outcomes for the fiber. The kenaf will be processed and studied alongside mulberry to produce a pulp log for fiber use. Factors include cooking agent (kenaf may require lye, which is not appropriate for studio use), material viability (harvested post seeding, container vs. land grown, stem branching, etc) and work timing.
Workshop Schedule
March 8
12:30 - 1:15 pm: Introduction to studio and history of handmade paper
1:15 pm - 3:00 pm: Steaming kenaf, cooking mulberry fibers
3:00 pm - 4 pm: Hand beating fiber in park across from 1104 (this utlizes concrete for the process, animating the city as a lab for rural practices)
March 15
12:30 - 1:00 pm: Room assembly and demo
1:00 pm - 3 pm: Cook kenaf / pull sheets with mulberry fibers
3 pm - 4 pm Kenaf beating demo / Drying system (metal sheets, wooden boards pellons)
Studio clean up, discussion on water and new emphasis on recycling
